Home Heating
Forced Air Systems
Natrual Gas Heating - Preferred 4 to 1 over electric.
The Basics
The most common type of natural gas central-heating system is forced air, which mixes cool air and gas in a combustion chamber, heating it and then re-circulating it to warm the home. Natural gas forced air systems heat your home faster, use less energy and last twice as long as an electric heat pump. Available additional features include pilot-less ignition and zone heating. How Do They Work?
In forced-air systems, the furnace draws in cool air from air intake ducts and moves it into a heat exchanger where it's warmed by the gas burner. An electric fan or blower then pushes the heated air through a filter and into a separate duct system where it is distributed throughout the house.Shopping Tips & Considerations:
Determine what size furnace your home will require. To size your furnace correctly, ask an HVAC Contractor to perform a load calculation before you buy. High-efficiency furnaces will cost more initially, but tend to cost less to operate because they require less fuel to generate the same amount of heat.
Consider venting options. Every heating system requires venting and you can now vent a natural gas furnace directly through a basement wall to reduce the cost of installation and maintenance.
Compare products, get several purchase and installation quotes and choose a qualified HVAC Contractor. Proper installation is critical. When installation is complete, ask your contractor to provide test results. Click here to find a qualified HVAC Contractor in your area.
Compare warranties and service support. Does the warranty cover the equipment and the installation? What is the availability and cost of service and maintenance?
Look for design-certified models tested to national standards by a nationally recognized laboratory.
