Convert To Natural Gas
The Process

Convert to Natural Gas with these easy steps:

  • Determine availability. You will need to provide your name, complete address (including zip code), phone number with the best time (s) to reach you, energy source(s) that you are currently using, and what appliance (s) you are planning to convert to natural gas. Once Washington Gas has obtained this information, we will let you know if gas is available to your home.

Submit your Natural Gas Conversion Request.

  • Get the internal process going. To begin the conversion process, the HVAC Contractor who will be installing your appliances will need to submit a copy of the signed proposal. The contractor must detail the number, type and BTU rating of the gas appliances you are proposing to install, what kind of pipe will be used inside your home and the desired location of the gas meter. This information should be reported via the Washington Gas Conversion Load Letter. If you are using one of Washington Gas' Qualified HVAC Contractors he/she will already have the Washington Gas Conversion Load Letter and you do not need to download it. If you are not using one of Washington Gas' qualified HVAC Contractors, please download a copy and have your contractor submit it to.

  • Determine the cost. A contribution, in addition to the cost of the equipment/appliances, may be required if the cost to install the service line, meter, and regulator exceeds $1,400. After you and your HVAC Contractor agree on equipment selection and submit the required paperwork, it could take up to three weeks to determine the required contribution (if any). Washington Gas will relay this information to your HVAC Contractor and he/she will notify you of any contributions due to Washington Gas. All expenses associated with converting your equipment/appliances (including the equipment/appliances, service line, meter, and regulator installation) can be financed with approved financing from any of Washington Gas' qualified HVAC Contractors. If a contribution is required, and you agree to the terms, you will need to submit payment along with a Commitment Letter to Washington Gas. You will receive the Commitment Letter, which will detail your required contribution, if any, via mail once we have received the proposal and Load Letter form your HVAC Contractor.

Hooray! Washington Gas has determined that there is gas available to your home, you're HVAC Contractor has submitted the Load Letter, and you have submitted your contribution (if applicable) and Commitment Letter. Now What? You're almost there. These final steps will ensure that bringing gas to your home is a smooth and hassle-free process.

  • Begin the Design Phase. All gas installations are subject to Washington Gas obtaining the necessary permits and easements. Once Washington Gas receives the required information and permits, we will notify your HVAC Contractor and proceed with the design and measurement for your gas service installation.
  • Have your gas service installed. We will coordinate with the utility locating service to mark the public underground utilities as required by law. You should locate and mark private underground utilities such as sprinkler systems, buried oil tanks or landscape lighting systems prior to service installation. Finally, we will schedule the installation of your natural gas service.
  • Have Your Meter Installed. Once the installation of the underground line is completed, contact your HVAC Contractor to have the interior gas piping installed and inspected. Make sure your heating contractor confirms the installation of the gas service with Washington Gas prior to removing your existing appliances. After your new equipment and piping is installed, you must call Washington Gas at 703-750-1000 to have your natural gas meter installed. Please notify us at least 72 hours in advance (excluding weekends and holidays). Certain appliances may require separate metering (gaslights, pool heaters and standby generators).

Whew! And you're done. Welcome to Washington Gas. Now you can enjoy a lifetime of the comfort and convenience that clean-burning natural gas provides.
