Product Installation
Use a Professional
Make it a priority that your natural gas home products are installed by a knowledgeable, experienced professional that you feel comfortable will do the job right the first time. Washington Gas highly recommends that all installations be performed by a licensed trade professional in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and local codes. All Washington Gas Participating Qualified HVAC Contractors will arrange for the installation of your new natural gas home products by a licensed trade professional.
Product Code Issues
Some gas-fired products sold and used in the U.S. are covered by a variety of certification standards, building codes, and local requirements. Heating products may also be covered by Department Of Energy efficiency test standards. For additional code/permit information, please contact your local code authority. Washington Gas recommends you ask your product dealer to confirm that the products you choose meet the approval of the code authority in your area.
Permit Requirements
Adding a natural gas product to your home requires a permit. Your dealer or installer should provide you with information regarding the necessary permits. Always request a copy of the permit from your installer to make sure your installation is in compliance with local codes and regulations. All installations should be inspected by the jurisdiction (county/city) that issued the installation permit.
Installing a Split Meter
The existing gas piping in your house may not be able to handle the additional load of a new gas home product. If this is the case, new piping may need to be installed, usually connecting your new product directly with your gas meter. Your installer may recommend a split meter installation. There is a charge to "split" the meter, but that charge may be offset by the labor savings that result from the use of 2PSI piping for the new installation.
