Revitalization Projects - "The Yards" - D.C.'s Hottest New Riverfront Destination!
Shopping, dining, living, and working will all come together to revitalize the south end of Capital Hill district at The Yards.
The Yards is bringing up to 1.8 million square feet of new office space, 2,800 residential units (both for lease and for sale), up to 400,000 SF of retail and a significant riverfront park and esplanade to the area of near Southeast DC formerly known as Southeast Federal Center.
Once an annex to the Washington Navy Yard, The Yards site long played a key role for the US Navy as an nautical industrial site producing ordnance for naval ships during World Wars I and II. As such, the site contains a number of historic industrial structures that will be restored as residential and retail space. Up to eight new commercial buildings are also planned, featuring impressive views of the nearby Anacostia River to the south and the iconic Capitol dome to the north. This exciting new district destination is served by the Navy Yard Metro station at First and M Streets SE and is adjacent to the new ballpark district containing the home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team (opening Spring, 2008).
Construction begins in 2007 with the first phase of buildings expected to open in 2009.
