What’s It About?

Natural Gas—The Energy of the City
Natural gas is delivered directly to homes and workplaces through underground pipelines. When your customers turn on a natural gas appliance, more than 90% of the energy is being used directly to provide a service, from water or space heating to cooking to clothes drying and more.

As a result, homes using gas appliances have far smaller carbon footprints than all-electric homes. Converting an electric home to clean, efficient natural gas is the equivalent of removing 2.8 cars per year from our highways. 1

About the Contest
We want you to help spread the word that natural gas is a clean and green energy source!  Get involved and you could win money for tuition, books, and other school expenses.

Washington Gas will award a $10,000 scholarship to the student who can develop the most creative, compelling, and original mini documentary about the current energy crisis and how using natural gas can help solve that crisis.  Think you have what it takes?

Here's How It Works

  1. Finalists will be selected from the group of applicants. Scholarship finalists will be chosen by an independent selection committee consisting of energy experts, respected members of the media and representatives from local communications firms. Finalists will be notified on May 15, 2009. 
  2. Each finalist will receive a $2,500 stipend to use toward materials and research. Finalist must provide receipts for all purchases upon submission of their video. NOTE: Failure to provide complete and accurate records will result in disqualification and possible legal action.
  3. Finalists will have the summer (June-August 15, 2009) to produce a video not longer than 8 minutes in length. The videos will be uploaded onto a proprietary website, produced by Washington Gas, where visitors and users will vote for their favorite video via a secure online voting server.
  4. The video with the greatest number of votes after a 2 week voting period will be awarded the scholarship. The deadline for video submissions is August 16, 2009.
