Water Heating
Storage Water Heaters
Natural Gas Water Heaters - Heat water twice as fast.
The Basics
Storage water heaters are the most common type of water heater in the U.S. - ranging in size from 20 to 80 gallons. Water is kept in a freestanding storage tank at a constant temperature 24 hours a day. Due to ease of installation, they make a good choice when converting from other types of water heating systems. Some models can even be installed outdoors.
How do they work?
When a hot water tap is turned on, the storage heater releases heated water from an insulated, corrosion resistant tank. The heated water flows out from a delivery pipe at the top and is replaced by cold water entering from the bottom. The cold water is heated by a thermostatically controlled gas burner.Shopping Tips & Considerations
- Decide the size and capacity necessary to satisfy your hot water needs. To do this, estimate how much hot water your household uses during peak hour demand. This is called first-hour rating (FHR). Look for a water heater with an FHR in that range.
- Determine the energy factor (EF) efficiency feature model you need. A high EF signifies a more efficient water heater, which means lower operating costs. Also, look for tanks with at least 1.5 inches of foam insulation.
- Consider location and combustion venting options. Choices include common vertical vent pipes or chimneys, horizontal vents, which are ideal for small areas, or power-assisted vents, ideal for homes without existing vertical pipes.
- Compare products, get several purchase and nstallation quotes, and check the Energy Guide Labels.
- Compare installation and repair warranties. Check maintenance requirements and service support availability.
- Compare products, get several purchase and installation quotes, and choose a qualified HVAC Contractor. Also consider installation and maintenance costs.
