Water Heating
Tankless Water Heaters
The Basics
Tankless water heaters are on demand systems without storage containers. They heat water only as you use it. Tankless water heaters are appropriate for homes of all sizes as well as commercial applications. A properly sized tankless water heating unit will provide endless, energy-efficient supply of hot water. Tankless water heaters can save on water heating costs and have an average life span of 20 years - significantly longer than the average life span of a tank heater. How do they work?
A tankless water heater only works when there is a demand for hot water. The hot water tap operates like an ignition key, triggering the burners as cold water enters the heater. Water heats at a constant temperature as long as the tap is open. When the tap is turned off, the system shuts down.Shopping Tips & Considerations:
- Decide if this type of heater will work for your home. A qualified HVAC Contractor will need to help you evaluate water usage and hot water flow requirements.
- NOTE: Tankless Water Heaters have unique gas volume1 demands and pressure2 requirements. To ensure proper installation of this appliance, please ensure 1) the correct gas service line3 capacity4 and pressure have been evaluated and verified; 2) your contractor has confirmed the requirements for the product being installed; and 3) you contact Washington Gas at 703.941.HEAT before installing a new natural gas appliance.
- Determine combustion air requirements. Because air is drawn from within the room where the water heater is installed, your installer may have to make special provisions.
- Consider venting options. In general, vent length should be as short and straight as possible. Also, have your HVAC Contractor make certain your gas line is sized properly.
- Compare products, get several purchase and installation quotes, and choose a qualified HVAC contractor. Also consider installation and maintenance costs.
- Compare installation and repair warranties. Even though today's models are designed to last for 20 years, you should check maintenance requirements and service support availability.
- Look for design certified models tested to national standards by a nationally recognized laboratory.
